چکیده

For the congenital malformations, as for many other non-communicable diseases and defects, the collection of epidemiological knowledge based on statistical procedures is just beginning. A comprehensive investigation of the incidence of malformations of the central nervous system in Birmingham, England, and the relationship of these malformations to certain epidemiological variables, has recently been reported by Record and McKeown (1949; 1950a,b; 1951) and McKeown and Record (1951). With the object of determining the applicability of these authors' results to areas other than England and Wales, a somewhat similar, retrospective investigation was undertaken in Rhode Island, U.S.A. This communication describes the findings of this investigation, with the exception of data relevant to the association with maternal age and parity, which is reported separately (Ingalls, Pugh, and MacMahon, 1953).

Secular changes in the incidence of malformations of the central nervous system.

In a previous communication (Record and McKeown, 1949) it was noted that in Birmingham the incidence of anencephalus and spina bifida decreased during the years 1940-47, while the incidence of hydrocephalus remained fairly constant. It was tentatively suggested that this decrease might be correlated with changes in the parity distribution of births, since it was shown that the incidence of anen...

An Examination of Familial Data for Associated Birth-order Effects in the Presence of Malformations of the Central Nervous System.

INTRODUCTION A number of investigations have been made of the estimation of the incidence of central nervous system (CNS) malformations. Several of these studies (e.g. McKeown and Record, Ciba Foundation, 1960) have stressed the association of malformations (e.g. spina bifida with anencephalus or hydrocephalus). The possible effects of birth order upon these malformations have been commented up...

Sex-linked hydrocephalus. Report of a family with 15 affected members.

Congenital hydrocephalus is a common cause of stillbirth and infant death [in Birmingham (Record and McKeown, 1950), Rhode Island (MacMahon, Pugh and Ingalls, 1953), and in Scotland (Edwards, 1958)], the incidence lying between one and two per thousand births, in each area the incidence being lower than that of either anencephalus or spina bifida. When the heterogeneous assembly of cases so des...

Incidence of anencephalus, spina bifida, and hydrocephalus related to birth rank and maternal age.

Several investigators have stressed the importance of genetic factors in the aetiology of malformations of the central nervous system, and some have even advanced hypotheses describing the genetic mechanisms involved. Such hypotheses are speculative, and the role of environmental events should continue to receive evaluation. Association of characteristics of the offspring with birth order or wi...
